Cairn Terrier - Tracie - Small - Adult - Female - Dog
Meet Tracie!
Tracie is a very pretty 9 year old, cream-colored female Cairn terrier who loves food, attention and toys. She is looking for an adult-only, terrier experienced home where she can be the only dog. My Story
Tracie came to CRUSA from NYC, from a situation of neglect, with elephant skin on her back and tail from untreated skin allergies, infected ears, and a urinary tract infection. She was found roaming the streets of New York City and when her owners were contacted (she is microchipped) they said that they did not want her back as she had been purchased for a son who was no longer living at home. We also found out that they kept her as an outside dog all year round (in Queen NY which has harsh, cold winters). My Special Need: Atopica
Initially we were able to bring her allergies under control with medicated baths and a corn-free diet, otomax for her ears and antibiotics. Her skin healed, her hair grew back and she got over her UTI and ear infection. Eventually, however, her skin allergies returned and she developed crusty lesions all over her body. Changing food had no effect although the allergies seemed to worsen with chicken, so we now avoid feeding her chicken. The allergies are apparently due to an overreaction of her immune system and Tracie now requires Atopica (50 mg daily) to suppress her immune system and thereby keep her skin healthy. With the Atopica, her hair grew back and the lesions disappeared. I Am Housetrained!
Tracie is 100% housetrained. She is also crate trained and will just as easily sleep in her crate, as in a dog bed. I Am a Laidback, Yet Spunky Cairn!
Tracie has a spunky personality. She always appears to be laughing and enjoys being a little mischievous by, for example, going into rooms where she is normally not allowed to go. She also prances when her humans come home. With toys, she loves destroying the stuffed ones and will even un-stuff a dog bed if she is bored and alone. At the vets, she is very well behaved with the doctors but will bark at other dogs in the waiting room. Tracie can also be laid back and enjoys watching television with her humans and sitting next to them on the couch. She will actively ask to be petted, putting her head under your hand and loves to give kisses too. She also loves going for walks and walks nicely on the leash but she can be reactive to cars, buses, trucks, bicyclists and other dogs and needs to be corrected. It is best to walk Tracie at a time when there are not too many people or traffic outside, and her home should have a fenced yard for the times when the streets are too busy to walk her. I Get Along With Other Dogs But Would Do Best as an Only Dog. Cats are Okay.
While Tracie has learned to get along and play with the other cairns in her foster home, she can still pick up fights over food, attention and toys and that is why we would prefer a home where she is the only dog. She has come across some cats and appears indifferent to them. I Need Exercise!
Tracie is a little overweight at the moment and needs a new forever home that will walk her to lose those extra pounds. She has a very good appetite and is very smart and will work for treats. I Am Up To Date
Tracie is spayed, current on her vaccinations, microchipped, has been tested for heartworm disease and is on a monthly heartworm preventative. As noted above, she also take a 50 mg Atopica pill daily for her skin allergies. Where is Tracie Now? (Local Adoptions Only Please)
Tracie is located in a private foster home in Princeton Junction, NJ. Due to her issues (see above), she can only be adopted to a home within a 90 mile radius of Princeton Junction. We also require that the home adopting her meet her at her foster home on at least 2 occasions and spend time with her during these meetings before taking her home so she will be familiar with her new owner. To adopt Tracie, please fill out our Adoption Application. <http://www.cairnrescueusa.com/adopt/frm_adopt.htm> To learn more about Cairn Rescue USA, please visit our Web site <http://www.cairnrescueusa.com/pet-finder/index.htm
