Randy and Elvis are adult American Shorthairs, around 6 years of age, and they were picked up off the street as kittens by my friend, who got them their shots and got them altered. They have been extraordinary first pets for me, their most remarkable quality an amazingly gentle nature compared to most of my friends' cats; they never get bitey or scratchy, even when I annoy them, clip their claws or force them (briefly) to wear kitty Christmas hats for a quick photo Elvis is the more playful of the two and perks right up at the sight of a shoelace or anything else dangly; and he does occasionally 'play bite', but he'll knock it off immediately if told to. He is also the heftier of the two and is obsessed with food. Elvis is also initially very afraid of strangers, but he warms right up to people after a day or two, once he's determined that they pose no threat - sometimes faster if the person is involved in feeding him! Randy is the cuddlier one (though Elvis does enjoy petting and lap time on occasion) and can sit in your lap, gently but firmly demanding that you continue to pet him, for ages; Why, one may wonder, would I give away such darling cats? The short answer is that I'm allergic and was told so by a doctor about three months after I got them, and as a compromise he proposed that I have them groomed and that I bar them from my bedroom. They shed far too much and too fast for me to singlehandedly (I live alone) keep the house from growing overrun with dander; my allergies are more to dust, but the combination of hair and dust gets them going, as I discovered when a far more violently allergic friend spent a month with me and, naturally, got my bedroom, leaving me to sleep in the living room, the cats' turf. If I can't just relax and enjoy their company without shooing them off furniture that I'd like to keep hair free every other moment, there's really no point having them. Another problem is that I travel quite a bit and it's getting harder and harder to find catsitters. I fear it may be even harder to find them a permanent home, but I hold out hope that a true cat lover will be able to enjoy these exceptionally sweet and gentle house cats as they deserve to be enjoyed.
